End of season for Helston Hurricanes

At Collingtons, we know what it means to be a part of the local community. We think it’s always important to support one another, in order to achieve a thriving local economy. In a world that can seem so disconnected, we believe it has never been more vital to retain those community ties, not just for the economy, but to provide opportunities for all. Helston is our community, and being a part of it means supporting something that is close to our hearts, and that’s the under 9’s football team Helston Hurricanes. “Myself, my brothers and sister all went to Helston School,” says the General Manager, Steve Cobbin, “so we have always been a part of the community here.” For all of us here at Collingtons, supporting this team, like we have done for many years prior for a number of local teams, is a way to give back to the younger generation. Every year we review which team we think will benefit the most from our support, and we are proud to sponsor Helston Hurricanes. We check in with our General Manager Steve, to see how the past year has gone since our last review.

How has the season gone for Helston Hurricanes since our last check-in, in July 2022?

The Hurricanes play in the St Anthony Kernow Youth League, which is the middle league in their age group. They have had a good season, with a mix of wins, draws and losses. Their highest scoring game came against Newquay, unfortunately losing 10-7.

How do you feel Collingtons’ role as sponsor has contributed to the success and morale of the team?

Being able to sponsor and support a football team is a great thing; the players feel like mini professionals when they get their sponsored match kit, and it helps them look the part when they play. It’s always a fun time when the players are discussing who will have which number on the back of their shirt, so they can be like their idols.

Can you tell us a little more about the end of season Presentation Day?

Every year Helston Athletic Football Club hosts a Presentation Day. Last year it was held at Flambards and involved stalls – hook a duck, skittle alley, that sort of thing – and games for all age groups to take part in. It’s a great way for the football club to generate much-needed funding. This year it was held at the Football Club and had stalls, a raffle and lots of football related games for all the kids of every youth team to play!

How did they get on in the R&T tournament?

For the last two years the Helston Hurricanes have participated in the R&T tournament, a spring/summer tournament that invites teams from around the country to compete against each other in a small league. They also get to meet a legend from the game at the presentation evening. It was held at Helston Football Club and Lizard Point Holiday Park last year and the players got to meet Neil Warnock at the presentation event. This year they played their matches at Hayle Rugby Club and came joint fourth in the league. This year the special guest was Peter Taylor, a former professional player and manager.

Do you have anything to say about the future of the relationship between Collingtons and the Helston Hurricanes?

Youth sport is always looking for businesses to sponsor them to allow them to continue to supply the players with new training and match kits, so this is a partnership that we will look to continue.

Helston Hurricanes have gone from strength to strength, and we are proud to be a part of their journey as a team, and as a vital aspect of maintaining the sporting community in Helston. If you'd like to speak to a member of our team about how to get involved in sponsoring a team, or about what we do here at Collingtons, then please do get in touch.
